UN Reno- The Works
The University of Nevada, Reno opened The Works, a steampunk inspired, fast casual restaurant and lounge. This retro-futuristic theme combines science fiction and 19th century steam-powered machinery. It emerged as the top restaurant theme presented to University of Nevada, Reno’s student focus groups. The inspiration came as the Webb Foodservice Design team was touring the University’s mining and metallurgical engineering programs. Gold and precious metal mining began in Nevada during the Victorian Era and Reno is a hub for steampunk festivals and expos.

The existing Fitzgerald lobby offered an expansive industrial space with high windows, brick, metal and concrete. The design integrates timeless industrial pieces with steampunk elements such as metallic copper and salvaged wood. Students are treated to “The Waffler” a waffle sandwich concept and “FORKlift” which serves Mexican Food. Exceeding the original projections of serving 500 guests per day in a Monday through Friday operation, The Works is a successful space offering a unique dining experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors alike.
