A collaborative approach to foodservice design.
Sonoma State University
Student Center
The new Sonoma State University Student Center is a 130,000-squarefoot, three-story building where students have a dedicated, centralized center for dining, studying, shopping, student government, alumni relations and more. The new center is situated in the heart of campus, creating a new hub of student life. The interior floor plan has several inviting venues for on-campus and retail dining. The list includes: The Kitchens, a food commons area seating up to 750 for residential dining with several food stations, such as: Slice — a brick oven pizzeria and pasta station; Flame-a-Grill — serving grilled sandwiches and burgers; Sizzle — a Mongolian Barbecue wok; Passport — serving different dishes from around the world, Etcetera — focusing on fresh-baked goods, soups and desserts, and Garden — specializing in fresh salads and fruits, as well as Chef’s — a demonstration kitchen showcasing a daily featured dish where students can see how the dish is made.

The center also provides retail dining establishments like the Lobos Pizza & Pub, the Overlook Restaurant with a third floor patio that overlooks a tree canopy, Weyden + Brewster — presenting soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza, burritos, burgers, fries and Mexican cuisine, as well as the café — for coffee and pastries.
“I wanted to create an environment here that will be just as much of an education as what they are getting in the classroom,…”
Eric Lee – executive chef, SSU Culinary Services
